Area Investigation
We imagined that Room 5 had been for a walk on a muddy day. How many pieces of newspaper would we need to be able to put all our shoes on them to dry?
We talked about how to make an estimate based on how many of us were in the class today and how big our shoes are. We decided that we needed to use the large sheets of newspaper and we would definitely need more than one. Then in our groups we tried to work it out.
We decided that we might need to have three sheets. So we tested it out with all our shoes to check.

Area
We are learning to use non-standard units to measure area. We drew around our hands and then used a variety of equipment to measure the area that our hands took up on the page.

Before we used each new item we had to estimate how many would fit on. We found it easier to estimate if we compared our hand to someone else who had already used the same thing or if we compared the answer for a similar sized object.
